How much does it cost to use Accelerate?

It's completely free to sign up to Accelerate! Accelerate Tutors charge a platform fee - £4.99 for 1:1 lessons and £2.99 for group classes.

This platform fee is payable by the student/ parent and added on top of your determined Tutor fee.

The only deduction a tutor will see is a 2% payment processing fee of the entire transaction, which facilitates the payments through a third-party secure payment provider, Stripe.

How much should I charge?

Our suggested rate for 1:1 tuition is £30 per hour; however we allow you the flexibility to set your own rate.

The published rate on our website is a ‘from’ rate per hour, so if you teach multiple subjects at a different rate (i.e. have a higher rate for A-level than GCSE lessons) you just need to be sure to communicate any change to the advertised rate with the parent/student at time of booking.

As you receive more enquiries and business, we will advise you to review your rates.

When setting your hourly rate, please bear in mind the platform fee of £4.99 is added on top of your tutor fee.

Am I self-employed?

As a self-employed private Tutor you should register as a sole trader with HMRC at your earliest convenience.

HMRC advise you to do this before earning more than £1,000 in tutoring fees. It’s a very easy process and you can do so by following this link:

Once you are registered as a sole trader, HMRC will send you a self-assessment tax return every year after the 5th April to declare your earnings for the previous tax year.

It is your responsibility to keep a record of your earnings and any expenditure (which is tax deductible) that you incur throughout the year.

At the end of each tax year you will be required to pay any tax and NI contributions as required by HMRC and should make provisions for this throughout the year. You can find out more information at:

How do I get paid?

All payments are processed through Stripe, a third-party secure payment provider. Payments are processed a week after the lesson takes place and are deposited directly into your nominated bank account shortly after.

All of your payment details are secure and there is no having to worry about outstanding payments.

How much commission do you take?

We don’t take any commission from your tutor fee. The platform fee is added on top of your tutor fee and is payable by the Student.

The only deduction to a tutor is a 2% payment processing fee of the entire transaction, which facilitates the payments through a third-party secure payment provider, Stripe.

Do I need to hold insurance?

We recommend holding Professional Indemnity Insurance.

How do I find students?

Once you have completed your profile and it has been approved and set to live, you will appear in any search a pupil conducts based on the filter results for subject specialism/level/ type of lesson etc.

If a pupil selects your bio, they have the option to book a class directly, or message you to enquire about your services and ask any questions ahead of booking.

It's important to maximise your bio as this will be your shop window to your customers!

How do students book lessons with me?

This can be done in one of two ways:

  1. A student sends you a booking request. You will receive an email notification alerting you to the request. Once you log back into your dashboard, you will see the request under Lessons and Classes. From here you will be able to accept the booking, which confirms the booking with the Student, decline the booking or propose a new time, if you cannot make the time the Student has requested for. Once confirmed, both you and your Student will receive an email notification which contains the zoom link to the lesson, which you simply click at the time of the lesson!
  2. If a Student has been messaging you to confirm a time, rather than waiting for the parent to send the request, you can send them a booking request directly. From the Student profile, open Create Booking Request, and fill in the required information. One a Student accepts the request, the lesson is confirmed, and the Zoom links will be generated.

For repeat bookings, its good practice at the end of each session to send the Student a request for the next lesson. It’s a great form of customer service and allows you to keep on top of your bookings.

You can also alter your rate here; perhaps you want to offer a special introductory rate, or you need to amend your rate for a particular student.

How do I update my availability?

This can be found under ‘Set Availability’ on your Tutor Dashboard. Toggle the ‘All Availability’ to the left and select the times you are available to accept bookings. This updates in real time and you can amend it any time.
